are suitable for anyone loves fantasy series and above 12 years old. To avoid
any spoilers and to maximize your reading experience, it’s better if you start

Hex Hall sets in modern time in Georgia, at a school
for reformed Prodigium’s kids called Hecate Hall (an old school build in 1854
and located in a remote location of Graymalkin Island). The school is for the
Prodigium child who could endanger the secret society because they cannot
control their own power over humans, just like what happens to Sophie. After
the incident in her last high school, Sophie is sentenced to go to Hecate Hall,
or some people call it Hex Hall, for two years until her eighteen birthday. The
school contains the strongest witches, warlocks, shapeshifter, fairies and
vampire, it also serves as a sanctuary since there’s a lot of people are
hunting down the Prodigium. But the whole new experience is really a shocker
for Sophie, since she’s raised by her human mother, and her own father is the
one who sent her to Hex Hall. Her mother and father already separated before
Sophie even born, and Sophie never knew her own father other than he’s a
warlock working for the Council for Prodigium. At Hex Hall, Sophie finds
herself new friends: Jenna (her roommate and the only vampire student at the
school) and Archer (a very hot bad boy and powerful warlock). But when two of
her fellow dark witches almost killed, and all the evidences pointing to Jenna
as the primary suspect, all hell broke loose. Sophie must learn to defend
herself, since there’s only two dark witches left, and one of them is Sophie.
The story begins in mid of August, and end in November the same year.
To be
honest, Hex
Hall is quite entertaining and I quite enjoying the plot twist and
the mystery in it. Also the heroine character, Sophie Mercer is quite good and kinda
a bad-ass girl, unlike some teenage characters in other young adult novels. Oh
of course there’s still teenage drama like other young adult fantasy novels out
there, but still not too much to make me sick. Sophie is a relatable character
and I kinda like her smart and sarcastic personality. Sure, the story line is
not too original at first: boarding school for magical beings, Sophie as an
outcast having a hard time fitting in and she’s has a great power but just
didn’t know how to use it, etc; but the writing makes this book enjoyable, and
the plot twists really surprise me. Overall, Hex Hall is a great book and I cannot
wait to read the next one.

menguasai sihir untuk dapat mejaga keselamatannya, karena hanya tinggal dua

Sejujurnya, Hex Hall cukup menghibur dan aku
cukup menikmati membacanya dengan adanya beberapa plot twist yang cukup
mengejutkan dan unsur misteri yang terkandung di dalamnya. Selain itu karakter
utamannya, Sophie Mercer cukup bagus dan merupakan gadis yang cukup tangguh, tidak
seperti karakter utama dalam novel-novel remaja lainnya. Oh pasti memang cukup
ada drama remaja seperti novel-novel fantasi remaja pada umumnya, tetapi tidak
terlalu berlebihan sehingga menyakitkan untuk dibaca. Sophie merupakan karakter
utama yang cukup real dan aku menyukai sisi kepribadiannya yang cerdas dan
sarkastik. Memang kalua dilihat dari sisi ide ceritanya, memang tidak terlalu
original: sekolah asrama untuk makhluk-makhluk sihir, Sophie sebagai murid baru
yang tidak popular mengalami kesulitan dalam membaur dengan murid-murid
lainnya, walaupun ia mempunyai kekuatan luar biasa yang masih belum dapat ia
kuasai cara penggunaannya, dll; tetapi dengan cara penulisan yang cukup menarik
membuat buku ini cukup dapat dinikmati, dan beberapa plot twist yang ada di
dalamnya cukup dapat memberikan kejutan manis. Secara keseluruhan, Hex Hall
merupakan buku yang bagus dan aku tidak sabar untuk segera membaca buku
lanjutannya.

Demon Glass begins
six months after the ending in Hex Hall. After all what happens in Hex Hall
last autumn, Sophie is considering the option to go to The Council in London
for a Removal Procedure, so her dangerous and uncontrollable power cannot
endanger the people that she loved. But when her father picks her up to stay
with him in England during the summer, Sophie finds another Demon kids just
like her are staying together with The Council. And when The Eye are also
targeting the member of Prodigium and Sophie, it is crucial for Sophie to
finally learning how to control her power with the help of her father to defend
herself, especially when they found out that maybe there’s hidden enemy that
secretly raising demons to build a powerful army that could endanger everyone.
Demon Glass sets in
Hecate Hall in Graymalkin Island, and also at England country side, where
Sophie is staying with her father and the other Council members for the summer.
In Demon
Glass, there are some new interesting characters that play important
parts in the story. We also get more story about Cal and the reason why he
decided to stay at Hecate Hall even after his graduation. I like the story
development in Demon
Glass and also the plot twist in it, and I can say that I really
enjoying reading this book. I especially like the bonding time between Sophie
and her father, even though there still somethings that keeps bothering me,
like how come her father never insist to meet with Sophie sooner and teach her
how to control her power, while he seems had time to teach to two other Demon
(Nick and Daisy) a thing or two. But I guess if that happens sooner, there
won’t be much story to tell after all. Just beware that this book ends in a
cliffhanger…

dimulai enam bulan setelah akhir cerita di Hex Hall. Setelah apa yang terjadi di Hex Hall
musim gugur lalu, Sophie mulai memikirkan pilihan untuk pergi ke Dewan
Prodigium di London untuk menjalani proses Pemunahan, agar kekuatannya yang
besar dan tidak terkendali tidak akan membahayakan orang-orang yang ia sayangi.
Tetapi saat ayahnya datang menjemput Sophie untuk menghabiskan liburan musim
panas dan tinggal bersamanya di Inggris, Sophie baru mengetahui bahwa ada dua
anak Demon lainnya yang juga tinggal bersama mereka dan Dewan. Dan saat itu The
Eye juga sudah mulai melancarkan aksi dengan menargetkan para anggota Prodigium
dan Sophie, maka menjadi sangat penting bagi Sophie untuk akhirnya mulai
belajar untuk mengkontrol dan menggunakan kekuatannya dengan bantuan ayahnya
untuk membela dirinya dari bahaya yang mengancamnya, terutama saat Sophie dan

yang terjadi, dan dapat aku informasikan bahwa aku menikmati membaca buku ini. Terutama
melihat hubungan yang mulai terjalin antara Sophie dan ayahnya, walaupun memang
ada beberapa hal yang cukup menggangguku seperti kenapa ayah Sophie tidak
bersikeras segera datang menemui Sophie dan mengajarkan mengenai cara untuk
mengkontrol kekuatannya, padahal ia kelihatannya memiliki cukup banyak waktu
untuk mengajari dua Demon lainnya (Nick dan Daisy) beberapa trik. Tapi yah bisa
dibilang kalua hal ini terjadi lebih cepat, tentu saja tidak akan ada cerita
yang dapat diceritakan, bukan? Hanya ingin memperingatkan bahwa Demon Glass
ini berakhir dengan akhir yang menggantung dan membuat penasaran...

Spell Bound starts two weeks after the ending of Demon Glass.
Sophie barely escape the attack at Thorne Abbey, and now she’s all alone
without knowing whether her father, or her friends: Cal, Jenna or even Archer
are still alive or not. Sophie is defenseless without her magic, and she’s
going to the Brannicks to look for her mother, just like what Cal told her
before he disappeared in the fire trying to save her father. Apparently not
everything told about the Brannicks are 100% true, and that’s what Sophie will
find out when she met with them. But when Sophie and the Brannicks just
starting to arrange a plan to get her magic power back, Sophie got taken away
back to Hecate Hall along with other students and held captive there. Without
her magic, she won’t able to defend herself or her friends. But if her magic is
back, she’s at a greater risk to be used and controlled by the bad guys as
their powerful secret weapon to destroy all the people she loved.
Spell Bound is the last book of Sophie’s adventure. I
have a mixed feeling about this book. Not that I hate it, it is after all a
decent OK book and there’s some parts that I like, but overall this last book
is a bit of a letdown for me after the first two books. Maybe the build-up and
anticipation from the second book, Demon Glass, that makes me expected more for
this final book, Spell Bound. But instead, I find the story line in Spell Bound
a bit of a mess and all over the place. And the most disappointing part is that
I just don’t get why the author didn’t bother to dig deeper to the story and
the characters since there’s so much story potentials to develop for a great
adventure, for example like the trip to the underworld. But instead we just got
that simple scene without any problem at all, feels like an anticlimax.
Everything in this final book just feels rushed and I kinda disappointed with
how easy everything turns out in the end. And while I’m not too happy with what
happen to Cal in this book and the way Sophie treated him, but I can accept the
ending as a way for him to finally got his own happy ending after all, and I
think the ending is kinda touching. Overall it’s not a bad book, just not too
great either.

dimulai dua minggu setelah akhir cerita di dalam Demon Glass. Sophie hampir saja
tidak berhasil kabur dari serangan yang terjadi di Thorne Abbey, dan sekarang
ia sendirian tanpa mengetahui apakah ayahnya dan teman-temannya: Cal, Jenna,
dan bahkan Archer masih hidup atau tidak. Tanpa adanya kekuatan sihir, Sophie
tidak berdaya untuk membela dirinya sendiri. Ia pergi kepada keluarga Brannick
untuk mencari ibunya, seperti yang diinformasikan oleh Cal sebelum ia
menghilang ke dalam gedung yang terbakar itu untuk mencari ayah Sophie.
Ternyata tidak semuanya yang dituduhkan kepada keluarga Brannick merupakan 100%
kebenaran, dan hal itu baru Sophie ketahui saat ia bertemu dengan mereka. Tetapi
saat Sophie dan keluarga Brannick baru saja menyusun rencana untuk mendapatkan
kekuatan Sophie kembali, Sophie tiba-tiba ditarik kembali ke Hecate Hall dan
ditahan di sana bersama dengan murid-murid lainnya. Tanpa kekuatan sihirnya,
Sophie tidak dapat melindungi dirinya sendiri dan teman-temannya. Tapi jika
sihirnya kembali, Sophie malah berada dalam bahaya yang lebih besar lagi untuk
dapat dimanfaatkan dan dikontrol oleh para orang jahat sebagai senjata mereka
untuk menghancurkan semua orang yang ia sayangi.
Spell
Bound
merupakan buku terakhir untuk petualangan Sophie. Aku mempunyai perasaan yang
bercampur mengenai buku ini. Bukannya aku membencinya, buku ini cukup ok dengan
beberapa bagian yang aku sukai, tetapi secara keseluruhan buku terakhir dari
trilogy ini sedikit mengecewakan untukku. Mungkin hal ini disebabkan karena
antisipasi yang tinggi dari buku keduanya, Demon Glass, yang membuat aku mengharapkan hal
yang lebih bagus lagi dalam buku terakhirnya, Spell Bound ini. Tetapi yang
terjadi malah aku mendapati jalan cerita dalam Spell Bound sedikit berantakan.
Yang terasa lebih mengecewakan dalam Spell Bound ini adalah bahwa pengarangnya sepertinya
tidak mau bersusah payah untuk menggali lebih dalam pada ceritanya, padahal ada
banyak potensial cerita yang dapat dikembangkan menjadi petualangan yang cukup
menarik disini, contohnya perjalanan para karakternya ke dunia Underworld. Tapi
bukannya petualangan yang didapatkan, hanya sedikit hal sederhana dan tanpa
masalah sama sekali yang dihadirkan disitu, sehingga terasa agak anti klimaks.
Semua yang terjadi di dalam Spell Bound ini terasa tergesa-gesa sehingga
agak terasa mengecewakan bagaimana semuanya berakhir dengan cukup mudah. Dan
walaupun aku tidak terlalu gembira dengan apa yang terjadi pada Cal di buku ini
dan bagaimana perlakuan Sophie terhadapnya, tapi aku dapat menerima akhir
ceritanya dengan cukup baik karena menurutku itu merupakan salah satu cara Cal
pada akhirnya mendapatkan akhir bahagianya, dan menurutku itu sedikit
mengharukan. Secara keseluruhan buku ini tidak jelek, tapi tidak bisa dikatakan
sebagai buku yang hebat juga.

School Spirits is a
spin-off story from Hex Hall series. It sets in a small town called Ideal,
Mississippi. It follows the adventure of Isolde Brannick, or mostly known as
Izzy. She’s Sophie Mercer’s cousin that first appear in Spell Bound. School Spirits
begins a couple of years after the ending in Spell Bound.
Izzy, now 15 years
old, having difficulty dealing with the mysterious disappearance of her older
sister in one of their missions. Her mother just gave her a chance to go on a
mission on her own, when she’s almost got killed by a vampire. That’s when her
mother decided to take a haunting case at a high school in a small town in
Mississippi. Izzy has to go undercover for a couple of months and experience
going to school and having friends for the first time.
Hmm… I didn’t have
much to say for School Spirits. It has several potential plot that could make
this story more interesting, but too bad there’s not much story development for
this spin-off story. I find the storyline a little bit boring, and there’s
still so much questions left unanswered until the end. I think at first this
book was intended to open for a new series about Izzy and maybe what happen to
her sister Finley, but now it seems that the book only serve as a stand-alone,
since there’s no indication that there will be any sequels soon. I find this
book as a standard light reading. I don’t hate it, but I’m not a big fan
either.

merupakan cerita spin-off dari serial Hex Hall. Cerita dalam School Spirits
berlatar belakang sebuah kota kecil bernama Ideal di daerah Mississippi. Buku
ini menceritakan petualangan dari Isolde Brannick, atau lebih dikenal sebagai Izzy.
Dia merupakan sepupu dari Sophie Mercer (tokoh utama dalam serial Hex Hall) yang
muncul pertama kali dalam buku ketiga, Spell Bound. Cerita dalam School Spirits dimulai beberapa
tahun setelah akhir cerita dalam Spell Bound.
Izzy,
sekarang berumur 15 tahun, mengalami kesulitan untuk mengatasi peristiwa
misterius dari kakak perempuannya yang tiba-tiba menghilang dalam salah satu
misi mereka. Ibunya baru saja memberikan kesempatan bagi Izzy untuk menjalankan
misi solonya, saat ia hampir saja mati terbunuh oleh seorang vampire yang ingin
ditangkapnya. Setelah itu ibu Izzy memutuskan untuk mengambil kasus hantu yang
terjadi di sebuah sekolah di sebuah kota kecil di Mississippi. Izzy harus
menyamar sebagai salah satu murid di sana selama beberapa bulan, yang sekaligus
merupakn pengalamannya yang pertama kali pergi bersekolah dan mendapatkan
beberapa teman.
Hmm…
Tidak banyak yang bisa dikatakan untuk buku School Spirits ini. Sebenarnya ada
beberapa plot cerita potensial yang dapat membuat cerita ini menjadi lebih
menarik lagi, tapi sayang sekali tidak ada pengembangan cerita yang digali
dalam cerita ini. Aku mendapati jalan cerita dalam buku ini sedikit
membosankan, dan ada banyak hal yang dibiarkan menggantung dan tetap tidak
terjawab bahkan sampai pada akhir cerita. Mungkin awalnya buku ini direncanakan
akan dibuat menjadi cerita serial baru mengenai petualangan Izzy dan
keluarganya, tetapi sayangnya rencana itu kelihatannya belum ada tanda-tanda
akan diteruskan oleh pengarangnya, sehingga saat ini buku ini dibiarkan
menggantung menjadi cerita lepas yang berdiri sendiri dengan banyak pertanyaan
yang masih menggantung. Aku rasa buku ini cukup standart sebagai bacaan ringan.
Aku tidak membencinya, tapi juga tidak memberikan kesan yang cukup mendalam
sebagai buku yang bagus juga.
