The Smythe-Smith Families and their
musical talent (or talentless??!?) first mentioned at Julia Quinn’s other books
Minx (book # 3 in Splendid Series), and then the
families constantly mention in the Bridgerton
Series as one of the running jokes JQ writes for her readers. And when they
finally got their own stories to tell, I’m quite excited to read them. The
series focusing to 3 branch of Smythe-Smith families. Stories in book 1 to book
3 is kinda connecting to each other and best to read according to their orders,
while book 4 could be read as a stand-alone. All books in the series are meant
for adult readers above 18 years old only.

Just
Like Heaven sets in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, and London, England.
It tells a romantic love story between Lady Honoria Smythe-Smith with Marcus
Holroyd, Earl of Chatteris. The story sets mostly in year 1824, with a few
flashback stories in 1821 and around 1809.
Honoria already known Marcus almost all of her
life, since she was 6-year-old to be precise. He was her older brother’s best
friend after all. And Marcus spent almost of his childhood life during school
breaks with his best buddy, Daniel Smythe-Smith, and his crowded family, which
makes him practically an honorary Smythe-Smith. But everything changes on 1821
when one fateful day and a fateful duel gone wrong makes everything falls apart
in their perfect lives. Daniel was forced to leave England and all his families
behind for his and their own safety, and asked Marcus to take care of his
younger sister while he was gone.
Fast forward three years later, Honoria met
with Marcus again when she and a couple of her cousins and friends visited
Cambridge. When an accident happens to Marcus that leads to a critical
condition, Honoria and her mother steps in and saving the day, and saving
Marcus’ life.
Just
Like Heaven is a sweet and simple love story between two friends.
The interesting factor from this series is finally we could get to read stories
from the legendary Smythe-Smith families. The Smythe-Smith was first briefly mention
in Minx
(Splendid Series #3) as a distant cousin of
the Hero if I’m not mistaken, then they get their regular appearance in The Bridgerton
Series as a running joke for their musical talent. I’m happy that finally
we could get their inside stories. Several characters from other series also
appears in this book, like the beloved Lady Danbury and the charming Colin
Bridgerton. Although the plot in this book is quite simple, the story is quite
fun to read and entertaining enough to pass the time.

Like Heaven berlatar belakang daerah Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, dan
London, Inggris. Buku ini menceritakan mengenai kisah cinta romantic antara
Lady Honoria Smythe-Smith dengan Marcus Holroyd, Earl of Chatteris. Kisah dalam
buku ini terjadi di tahun 1824, dengan beberapa flashback di tahun 1821 dan
sekitar 1809.
Honoria sudah mengenal Marcus hampir
sepanjang hidupnya, sejak ia berusia 6 tahun lebih tepatnya. Hal itu terutama
disebabkan karena Marcus merupakan sahabat baik dari satu-satunya kakak
laki-laki Honoria. Dan Marcus memang lebih banyak menghabiskan masa liburan
sekolahnya dengan sahabat terbaiknya, Daniel Smythe-Smith, dan keluarga besar

akhirnya kita mendapatkan kisah mengenai keluarga Smythe-Smith yang banyak
muncul di dalam serial-serial JQ lainnya. Keluarga ini pertama kali disebut
sekilas dalam Minx
(Splendid Series #3) kalau tidak salah
sebagai sepupu jauh dari tokoh utama prianya, dan setelah itu keluarga ini
secara rutin muncul dalam The Bridgerton Series sebagai salah satu lelucon
dengan penekanan terhadap bakat music mereka. Aku cukup senang pada akhirnya
kita dapat melihat lebih dekat dan mendapatkan cerita dari dalam keluarga
mereka. Beberapa karakter dari serial lainnya juga ada muncul dalam buku ini,
seperti Lady Danbury yang terkasih dan Colin Bridgerton yang menawan. Walaupun
plot cerita di buku ini cukup sederhana dan tidak rumit, namun jalan ceritanya
cukup menarik untuk dibaca dan cukup menghibur untuk mengisi waktu senggang.

A Night Like
This tells a romantic love story between Daniel Smythe-Smith, the
Earl of Winstead with a young lady working as a governess at his aunt’s family,
named Anne Wynter (or that is what she tells everyone). The story sets in
London and Berkshire, England on 1824, and flashback to 1816 in Northumberland
and 1821 in London.
The story starts just where Just Like
Heaven left off, at the night of the Smythe-Smith Musicale in Spring
1824, the night when Daniel finally got home from his three years in exile
running from one place to another to avoid all of the people sent to kill him. That
night also the first time Daniel sees Anne from across the room and falls in
love. While Anne is trying her best to fight her growing feelings for the
handsome and dashing Earl of Winstead, Daniel is determined to make Anne his
wife. But the danger from Anne’s past is finally catches up with her and coming
to haunted her and threatens all the persons she cares the most.
For me, A Night Like This is just
another typical historical romance with a charming hero and a damsel in
distress needs to be rescued. Don’t get me wrong though, the story is good and
enjoyable with some funny moments in it. It is indeed quite entertaining, but
that’s only it, nothing really stands out and make this novel special and
memorable compares with the other historical romances out there.

kesulitan yang harus diselamatkannya. Jangan salah sangka, sebenarnya cerita
dalam buku ini cukup bagus dan cukup dapat dinikmati dengan beberapa bagian
tertentu yang cukup lucu. Dapat dikatakan bahwa buku ini cukup menghibur, tapi
yaah menurutku hanya sebatas itu, tidak ada sesuatu yang sangat menonjol
ataupun terasa sangat istimewa dari buku ini yang dapat membuat kisah dalam
novel ini berbeda dari novel historical romance standart yang lainnya.

The Sum Of All Kisses sets in Cambridgeshire
and Berkshire around autumn 1824. The story starts just a day before Honoria’s
and Marcus’ wedding day, a few months after the ending of Just Like Heaven and A Night Like
This. The story focusing between Lady Sarah Pleinsworth (Honoria’s
cousin) and Lord Hugh Prentice (Daniel’s and Marcus’ friend). There’s a lot of
reasons for Lady Sarah to hates Lord Hugh, first because of Hugh’s father makes
her cousin Daniel had to leave England for three full years in running and
sending a lot of men to kill him, and mostly because of their duel scandal makes
both Honoria and Sarah had to postpone their debut in 1821, and lost her chance
with 14 potentials eligible Gentlemen. Hugh also not too impressed with Lady
Sarah, since he thinks that she’s too dramatic for his taste.
So when they both attend Honoria’s and
Marcus’ wedding and have to be polite with each other on the bride’s request,
they both find themselves in an odd situation that maybe they are not as bad as
the other thinks.
Well, not much I can say about The Sum of All
Kisses. The story is not bad, but nothing feels special or stands
out either for the romantic department. Honestly both the Hero and Heroine are
not my favorites character so far. I like Sarah’s little sisters : Harriet,
Elizabeth and Frances better than both the hero and heroine.

Ada banyak alasan bagi Lady Sarah
untuk membenci Lord Hugh. Yang pertama disebabkan karena ayah Hugh membuat
sepupunya, Daniel, terpaksa untuk meninggalkan Inggris dan hidup dalam pelarian
di luar negeri selama tiga tahun dengan banyaknya orang yang diutus untuk
membunuhnya. Lalu ada juga akibat dari duel yang dilakukan oleh Daniel dan Hugh
yang mengakibatkan skandal hebat sehingga baik Honoria dan Sarah terpaksa harus
menunda debut mereka di London pada season 1821, sehingga Sarah kehilangan
kesempatan untuk berkenalan dengan 14 Gentlemen potensial yang ada di tahun itu.
Hugh juga tidak terlalu terkesan dengan Lady Sarah, dengan sikapnya yang
terlalu dramatis bagi Hugh yang selalu berpikiran rasional. Jadi saat keduanya
menghadiri pesta pernikahan Honoria dan Marcus, yang dilanjutkan dengan
pernikahan Daniel dengan Anne, keduanya berada dalam keadaan yang mengharuskan
mereka bersikap sopan dan baik terhadap satu sama lain atas permintaan Honoria,
dan di saat-saat yang mereka habiskan bersama itulah mereka mendapati bahwa
ternyata mereka mungkin sudah salah paham terhadap satu sama lain, dan mungkin
saja ternyata selama ini baik Hugh maupun Sarah tidak seburuk yang mereka
bayangkan.
Hmmm, sejujurnya tidak banyak yang
dapat aku katakan mengenai The Sum of All Kisses. Sebenarnya cerita dalam
buku ini tidak jelek, tetapi entah kenapa aku merasa tidak ada yang terlalu
istimewa juga untuk kisah cinta romantisnya. Dan sejujurnya, kedua tokoh utama
dalam cerita ini juga bukan merupakan tokoh favoritku dalam serial ini. Yang
mencuri perhatianku malah lebih ke adik-adik Sarah : Harriet, Elizabeth dan
Frances.

The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy tells a
love story between Miss Iris Smythe-Smith with Sir Richard Kenworthy. We first
met with Iris previously in Just Like Heaven and then in The Sum of All
Kisses. Well, The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenwothy starts a
few months after the ending of The Sum of All Kissess, in London, England at
another Smythe-Smith annual concert. This time the story focusing to Miss Iris
Smythe-Smith, the 4th daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Smythe-Smith (I
assume that Iris’ father is the younger brother of Daniel Smythe-Smith’s
father, the late Earl of Winstead). In the previous books, Iris is described as
a wallflower that tends to blend in the background and not many gentlemen
notice her at all. I’m guessing that Iris is the one that Lady Danbury and
Penelope meant in their conversation in It’s in His Kiss, when they point to “the poor
girl behind the Cello” in their conversation before the concert starts. So I
assume that the story in The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy happens
at the same year as Hyacinth’s story in It’s in His Kiss.
The story in The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy
is quite simple, but quite entertaining with all of the secret motives that Richard
was trying to hide from Iris when he first demand of an introduction to her. I
enjoyed reading this book most compare to all previous 3 books in this series.

Heaven dan kemudian di The Sum of All Kisses. Kisah dalam The Secrets of
Sir Richard Kenwothy dimulai beberapa bulan setelah akhir cerita
dalam The
Sum of All Kissess di London, Inggris di konser tahunan keluarga Smythe-Smith.
Kali ini cerita cintanya berfokus kepada Miss Iris Smythe-Smith, anak ke-4 dari
Mr. dan Mrs. Smythe-Smith (aku menyimpulkan bahwa ayah Iris merupakan adik
laki-laki dari ayah Daniel Smythe-Smith, Earl of Winstead sebelumnya yang sudah

Sebenarnya kisah dalam The Secrets of
Sir Richard Kenworthy cukup sederhana, tapi cukup menghibur dengan
segala motif rahasia yang disembunyikan oleh Richard dari Iris dari sejak ia
meminta perkenalan dengannya. Aku cukup menikmati membaca buku ini, bahkan
lebih dari ketiga buku lainnya di dalam seri Smythe-Smith ini.
