An Unfortunate Fairy Tale Series tells an adventure fantasy
stories of a young 15 years old girl named Mina Grime as she found out that she
and her younger brother, Charlie are descendants of Wilhem Grimm, one of the
famous brother Grimms. She and her family are cursed for generations since her
Great Great Great Grandfather and his brother crossed path with the Fates (the
Fae Ruler) in Fae Plane.
There
are 5 books and 1 short story in total for this series, and it is better to
read them in their orders to understand the story and to keep up with the all
characters’ developments and the story line better. These books are targeted to
teens and young readers, although an adult like me will also enjoy reading it.
Too bad this series haven’t published in Indonesia yet, so if you my fellow
Indonesian would like to read it, you could get them in eBook format instead.
And
since these books in the series will highlighted especially in the Heroine
characters’ development as part of the story line and plots, I suggest you just
to be patients in reading the series up until the last books since at first Mina’s
character seems a bit annoying even for me, but as the story progress, it will
be clear that those things are not entirely her fault and it tied up with her
story growing up. And believe me when I say that your patience will be rewarded
on the last two books. Overall, the story line is quite good and entertaining.
Everything builds up to the last book, but there’s always some surprises and
plot twists that keeps me on the edge in every book until I finished reading
the whole series. I can say that the story line in the series is quite original
and although it’s not the best written story out there, it’s definitely a book
series for keeps for me…

saat ia mengetahui bahwa dirinya dan adiknya, Charlie merupakan keturunan dari Wilhem

keluarganya ternyata berada dalam kutukan yang sudah menghantui keluarga mereka

dalam serial ini ada 5 buku dan 1 cerita pendek, dan sebaiknya buku-buku ini
dibaca sesuai urutan mereka supaya dapat lebih mudah dimengerti dan dapat
mengikuti perkembangan diri dari para karakternya dan perkembangan jalan
ceritanya dengan lebih baik. Buku-buku di dalam serial ini ditujukan untuk para
pembaca muda dan remaja, walaupun orang dewasa seperti aku ini juga akan
menikmati membacanya. Sayangnya saat ini serial ini belum diterbitkan dan
dicetak dalam versi buku Indonesianya, sehingga jika teman-teman di Indonesia
ingin membacanya, harus mencari versi eBook nya.
Dan
berhubung buku-buku dalam serial ini menekankan pada perkembangan karakter
utamanya sebagai bagian dari jalan cerita dan plotnya, aku sarankan bagi kalian
yang mambacanya, jangan cepat-cepat kesal dengan penggambaran karakter tokoh
Mina yang awalnya terasa cukup mengganggu dan menyebalkan sebagai tokoh utama.
Aku sarankan tetap sabar membaca sampai keseluruhan buku dalam seri selesai,
karena dengan perkembangan ceritanya, karakter Mina pun akan turut berkembang
dan semuanya akan menjadi jelas bahwa karakter lemahnya yang di awal-awal
cerita tidak sepenuhnya merupakan kesalahannya semata dan terikat pada proses
pendewasaan dirinya. Secara keseluruhan, keseluruhan jalan cerita dalam serial
An unfortunate Fairy Tale ini cukup bagus dan menarik untuk dibaca. Semua plot
cerita akan mencapai puncaknya di buku terakhir, walaupun akan ada sejumlah
kejutan dan plot twist di dalam setiap bukunya yang membuatku terus penasaran
sampai buku terakhir selesai dibaca. Menurut pendapatku, buku ini ide ceritanya
cukup original, dan walaupun bukan merupakan serial cerita fantasy yang terbaik
di luar sana, tapi buat aku buku ini sangat layak untuk masuk dalam koleksiku…

UnEnchanted tells the story of a young 15 years old girl
name Mina Grime who live in a small city with her mother, Sara, and her little
brother, Charlie. Mina is not a popular girl in her high school, even considered
as a loser with her clumsiness, low self-esteem, and her non-accomplishment.
Mina also doesn’t have a cell phone because as a single mother of two, her
mother is struggling with their living expenses budget. Mina’s only friend is a
sweet girl name Nan Taylor. And like most girls from her high school, Mina
secretly has a crush over the most popular boy in the school, Brody Carmichael.
But
everything changes when Mina and her class is going to their field trip to the
local bakery and saved Brody’s life in an accident when touring the factory. But
a few days later, strange things that cannot be explain starting to happens
around Mina, which makes her mother very worry and starting to pack for moving
to another city. Her mother’s worries are reasonable since Mina and her brother
Charlie is actually the descendant of the famous Brother Grimm. For over these
hundreds of years, the Grimms are haunted by a family curse made by the Fae.
After Mina
find out the real background of her family, she decided she’s tired of running
and will try to stay to fight the family curse since she don’t want her brother
to face the curse also. The only way that the Fae’s curse can be broken is by
completing a series of quest from fairy tale sets by a magical and very
powerful entity known as ‘Story’.
In order
to do that, Mina has to find their family heirloom, The Grimoire, which
contains an equal powerful magic to match the power of Story and helps the
Grimms in their quests. Because the more quests a Grimm finished, the next
quest will be more dangerous than the previous one. But the Grimoire is not
easy to find, only a few chosen Grimm that have the help from the Grimoire to
fight the The Story. This of course become a challenge for Mina to try to find
it, especially when some bad people also seems to be looking for the Grimoire
and try to hurt Mina in the process.
Can Mina
find the Grimoire quickly since dangers are lurking in the corners and the
clock is ticking with the new quest of Little Red Riding Hood approaching? And
who is Jared, the mysterious boy that suddenly appears in her school as a new
transfer student? And how is the relationship between Mina and Brody endured over
all the dangers and challenges that happens between them?
This book
really interesting and give me new perspective in seeing the fairy tales. It is
a Young Adult books, so of course there will be silly behaviors, silly actions
or even silly thoughts from the characters, but thankfully not too much. The
story in UnEnchanted
is told from third person point of view, so it allows us to get enough
proportions to see the whole story not just from the main Heroine point of
view, but also from other characters as well. The Plot in UnEnchanted is quite thrilling
and unpredictable and always keep the readers on the edge to what will gonna
happen to Mina next. All the events happens in UnEnchanted only took place in
three weeks’ time, and ends with a cliffhanger.
There are
three fairy tales in UnEnchanted : Hansel and Gretel, The Stag and
The Bull (The Glass Coffin), and Red Riding hood. But even the tales that
already familiar to us, like Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood, are
not conventional and all come with a twist. And just like the title UnEnchanted,
this story is not come with all happily ever after ending. UnEnchanted is only the beginning,
the 1st book in the series. There’re still a lot questions left
unanswered and mysteries to be solved in the next books. I just can’t wait to
read the next books.
Overall UnEnchanted is quite interesting to read with
rating 7.5/10.

menceritakan mengenai kehidupan seorang remaja berusia 15 tahun bernama Mina
Grime yang tinggal bersama Ibunya, Sara dan adik laki-lakinya, Charlie. Mina
bukanlah seorang gadis popular di sekolahnya, ia hanya mempunyai seorang
sahabat baik bernama Nan, ia diam-diam menyukai cowok paling popular di
sekolahnya, Brody Carmichael, dan ia benar-benar tidak beruntung dan clumsy.
Tetapi semuanya ini berubah seketika saat
Mina dan teman-teman sekolahnya melakukan field trip ke toko roti local dan
menyelamatkan Brody dari kecelakaan yang hampir membuatnya meninggal. Sejak
saat itu mulai terjadi hal-hal yang aneh di sekeliling Mina, yang membuat Ibunya

mencoba memutus kutukan keluarganya karena ia tidak mau adiknya Charlie
nantinya ikut menanggung beban kutukan keluarga tersebut. Satu-satunya cara
agar kutukan keluarga Grim bisa dihilangkan adalah dengan mengikuti serangkaian
quest yang harus dijalani sesuai kisah dari dongeng yang dipilihkan oleh “Story”,
salah satu tetua peri yang sangat sakti dan mempunyai kekuasaan yang sangat
besar baik di dunia peri maupun di dunia manusia.
Untuk bisa mengalahkan Story, Mina memerlukan
Grimoire (buku pusaka milik leluhurnya) yang mempunyai kekuatan sihir yang bisa
mengimbangi kekuatan sihir Story dan dapat membantu keturunan Grimm yang
terpilih untuk menyelesaikan quest-quest yang diberikan. Karena dengan semakin
seringnya quest-quest yang terselesaikan, maka tingkat kesulitan dan bahaya
dari quest-quest berikutnya akan semakin meningkat. Masalahnya Grimoire
tersebut tidak setiap kali muncul pada semua keturunan Grimm. Hal ini tentu
saja menyulitkan Mina dalam menemukannya, apalagi dengan mulai munculnya
beberapa orang jahat yang juga mengincarnya dan mencoba menyakiti Mina.
Dapatkah Mina segera menemukan Grimoire dan
mengatasi semua bahaya yang mengincarnya, terutama dengan semakin dekatnya
Quest Red Riding Hood yang membayanginya? Dan siapa pula Jared, anak lelaki
misterius yang muncul sebagai murid baru di sekolah Mina? Dan bagaimana masa
depan hubungan Mina dan Brody dengan segala bahaya dan tantangan yang harus
dijalaninya?
Buku UnEnchanted ini cukup menarik, walaupun
kembali mengangkat kisah dongeng sebagai tema ceritanya. Buku ini ditujukan
untuk remaja atau kaum muda, jadi tentu saja akan ada beberapa kegalauan yang
terjadi pada para karakternya. Cerita dalam UnEnchanted diambil dari sudut
pandang orang ketiga, sehingga cukup dapat menjelaskan keseluruhan porsi dari
cerita tidak hanya dari sisi tokoh utamanya saja, tetapi juga dari sisi para
karakter lainnya juga. Plot yang disajikan dalam buku ini cukup tegang dan
jalan ceritanya tidak dapat diprediksi karena selalu membuat pembaca
bertanya-tanya apa yang akan terjadi pada Mina di halaman berikutnya.
Total ada tiga buah dongeng yang menjadi
dasar tantangan untuk Mina di dalam UnEnchanted, yaitu Hansel and Gretel, The Stag
and The Bull, dan Little Red Riding Hood. Tapi bahkan isi dari dongeng-dongeng
yang sudah sering kita dengar pun, seperti Hansel and Gretel dan Little Red
Riding Hood, tidak sama dengan tantangan yang harus dihadapi oleh Mina di dalam
buku ini. Dan tidak semua pertanyaan yang ada akan terjawab di akhir cerita
karena masih banyak misteri yang baru akan pelan-pelan diungkap di dalam
buku-buku selanjutnya.

In Fairest,
Mina will be back fighting The Story to free her and her family from the Fae

face all the challenge and quests by herself without the help of her best
friend Nan Taylor, and her ex almost boyfriend Brody Carmichael. After what
happens in school dance at the night of her 16th birthday when Mina
completed the Little Red Riding Hood quest, nobody seems to remember what
happens in the last month, like the whole school is like under a reset button.
Mina is back to become invisible again, and people look at her as a clumsy,
unpopular and loser old self. Everyone forgets about what happens in the Bakery
when Mina saves Brody’s lives. Nan forgets that Mina is cursed. Even Brody
doesn’t remember about Mina and their sweet but short moments together.
Mina cannot share
what happens to Nan and ask for her help like before, since she doesn’t want to
put her best friend in danger again like what happens in the night at the
school dance. Mina also can only looking for Brody from a far, and keep her
broken heart aside to focus on the great task to defeat her family’s curse. And
Jared, who seems the only one besides Mina that knows what happens before, is
confusing Mina by ignoring and avoiding her. So once again Mina must face the
quests thrown by The Story all by herself.
The events in Fairest
happens a month after the ending in UnEnchanted. In Fairest, Mina has to face a very
dangerous enemy when she finished the tale of Goldilocks and The Three Bears,
Snow White and also Sleeping Beauty. With the unpredictable story line, Fairest
is really interesting to read since we cannot predict what’s gonna happens next
and also we got to questioning the motives from each new characters and are
they in the good side or the evil side of the quests that Mina has to face.
Maybe to some people,
the tone for Fairest
feels darker than UnEnchanted since in this book Mina has to
deals with her negative emotions such frustration, heart break, also loneliness
because Mina can’t involve Nan and Brody again this time without make them as
targets for The Story like the previous quest in UnEnchanted, so she didn’t has
anyone to support her this time. In my opinion, all the things happens in this
second book needs to happens to Mina for her to grows stronger to face the next
Quest, and become a really great Heroine to face The Story. This book is a
journey for Mina’s character to learn to control her dark side.

Dalam Fairest ini Mina kembali menghadapi
quest-quest yang dilemparkan Story kepadanya, namun kali ini ia sendirian
menghadapi para Fae yang jahat setelah hilangnya ingatan seluruh teman sekolah
Mina saat ia menyelesaikan quest Little Red Riding Hood satu bulan sebelumnya.
Di mata teman-teman sekolahnya Mina kembali menjadi dirinya yang lama yang
tidak populer dan tidak terlihat. Bahkan Brody pun kembali tidak mengingat Mina
dan kedekatan hubungan mereka yang terjalin selama beberapa minggu sebelumnya
di UnEnchanted.
Mina juga tidak dapat kembali
menceritakan asal usulnya kepada Nan dan meminta bantuan sahabatnya itu seperti
sebelumnya, setelah apa yang terjadi saat malam pesta dansa itu Mina tidak mau
menempatkan Nan dalam posisi yang berbahaya lagi. Jadi sekali lagi Mina harus
menjalani semuanya sendirian, karena bahkan Jared pun, yang merupakan
satu-satunya orang yang dapat mengingat kejadian sebelumnya, tidak mau
berbicara dengan Mina dan selalu menghindarinya di sekolah.
Dalam Fairest ini Mina menghadapi

ini menarik karena setiap halamannya selalu membuat pembaca menduga-duga
kejadian berikutnya dan menebak-nebak motif dari masing-masing karakter baru
yang muncul, apakah termasuk tokoh protagonist ataupun antagonis dalam cerita
dongeng yang harus dihadapi oleh Mina di dalam petualangannya.
Nuansa cerita di
dalam Fairest
ini terasa lebih gelap karena rasa frustasi dan kesepian dari Mina untuk
menghadapi segala sesuatunya sendirian karena ia tidak dapat membagi rahasianya
tanpa resiko membahayakan orang-orang yang dekat dengannya, dan Mina tidak mau
mengalami kembali rasa patah hati yang pernah dirasakannya saat Nan dan Brody melupakan
hal-hal yang terjadi setelah Mina menyelesaikan quest nya di buku pertama UnEnchanted.
Namun menurutku semua kejadian di buku ini menjadi momen bagi Mina untuk
bertumbuh menjadi dewasa dan kuat dalam menghadapi tantangan yang akan
dihadapinya, dan menjadi seorang heroine yang benar-benar dapat dibanggakan.
Buku ini menjadi perjalanan perkembangan karakter Mina dalam belajar menghadapi
sisi gelapnya.

interesting to see the story from Jared’s POV. In this book we got to see a
glimpse of Jared’s conflicted feelings towards Mina, and what makes him behave
like a jerk in Fairest.

friends, Nan, Brody and her family from being used by Teague, and also to break
and end her family curse is by stopping Teague by killing him. Mina is just not
so sure if she will be able to do the killing or how is she gonna do it since
Teague is extremely powerful. She also cannot talk about this with Jared and
ask for his help since Teague is his brother, his evil brother to be exact, but
still family. Mina is not sure how’s Jared gonna react if he know Mina is
planning to kill his family to save her family, so she decided to keep that as
a secret from Jared.
But Mina cannot keep
avoid Teague and his quests forever when she has to take a cold reality that
the Evil Fae Prince doesn’t like to be ignored. In order to force Mina to do
what he wants, he makes Mina losing what she love the most. He sent one of his
evil Fae, Templestilskin (one of the descendant of Rumplestilskin) to burn her
home and also taken her brother, Charlie as a hostage in the Fae Plane. The
only way to save Charlie, Mina has to make deal with Temple with the risk to
become one of Temple’s servants for eternity if she fails to fulfill the deal.
In Fable,
everything will be much more interesting than the first two books. In Fable,
Mina will go through her biggest challenge to confront both Teague and Temple Stilskin
face to face in the Fae Plane, in order to save her brother, Charlie. And since
the Grimoire and Jared cannot go to Fae Plane, Mina had to confront her enemies
on her own.
Fable feels
really intense with fast pace story and a lot of plot twists to make the story
unpredictable. I cannot wait to see what’s the author has in store for the next
book, because Fable
answered so many questions build up from the first books, yet there’s still a
lot that we still don’t know and the ending for Fable brings up so many mix
feelings. Not many books that can give me such a strong impression, but Fable
is really interesting and can keep me on edges in every pages trying to guess
what will happen next.

Setelah
hal-hal yang terjadi di akhir buku Fairest, Mina memutuskan untuk sementara
menghindari quest-quest yang dilemparkan oleh Story aka Teague selama liburan
musim panas. Dengan tantangan perang yang Mina lontarkan kepada Teague saat
pertemuan mereka, Mina tidak yakin mengenai apa yang akan dilakukannya. Ia
mengetahui satu-satunya cara untuk menghapus kutukan keluarganya dan
menyelamatkan teman-temannya, Nan dan Brody, dari terus menerus tertarik dalam
setiap bahaya Quest yang harus dijalani Mina adalah dengan menghentikan Teague
dan membunuhnya. Ia hanya tidak yakin apakah ia sanggup melakukannya dan
bagaimana cara ia dapat melakukannya karena Teague sangat sakti. Ia juga tentu
saja tidak dapat mendiskusikan hal ini dengan Jared dan meminta bantuannya

oleh Temple.
Dalam
Fable,
Mina akan mengalami cobaan terberatnya dalam menghadapi Teague. Mina yang
dibantu oleh Godmother Guild mencoba untuk pergi ke dunia peri untuk
membebaskan Charlie yang ditawan di sana, walaupun ia terpaksa harus menentang
larangan keras dari Jared. Grimoire dan Jared tidak dapat kembali ke dunia
peri, sehingga Mina harus bisa bertahan hidup di dunia peri yang penuh bahaya
tanpa bantuan keduanya untuk dapat menyelamatkan adiknya.
Fable ini
terasa sangat intense dengan alur cerita yang terasa sangat cepat dan jalan
ceritanya benar-benar tidak dapat diprediksi dengan banyaknya plot twist yang
ada. Fable
membuatku ingin secepatnya mencari buku lanjutannya karena penasaran dengan apa
yang akan terjadi selanjutnya dan apa yang masih disimpan oleh pengarangnya,
Chanda Hahn. Tidak banyak buku yang dapat membuat aku terkesan, namun untuk Fable
ini jalan ceritanya cukup menarik dan benar-benar membuat aku berdebar-debar di
setiap halamannya karena mencoba menebak-nebak apa yang akan terjadi
selanjutnya.

like the others, Mina has to go travel back in time to the past finding the
cause of the Grimms’ disappearance and save them all before the clock strikes
midnight.
I only have one word
to describe Reign
: WOOW. Not many books or series that can keep me on edges and excited the
whole time, but Reign
and this Series from Chanda Hahn is definitely made in the short list. I can
say that Reign
perhaps is the best book in the series so far. It brings out so many mixed
feelings
In Reign,
we go back in time to the Fae Plane in the past a couple hundred years ago when
everything started, before the curse to the Grimm family happens, and before
Teague becomes evil and reign the Fae Plane. In this book we see that
everything has two sides of the coin. Not every time what we think dark is
totally dark, and not every time what we think light is purely light. And for
every action there will be a reaction that follows. The fast pacing writing
from Chanda Hahn makes Reign interesting and not boring since the
story is unpredictable and keep the readers keep wondering what will gonna
happen next.

dapat membunuh Teague secepatnya dengan bantuan para Godmother. Apalagi dengan
ada ancaman baru yang muncul dari menghilangnya satu per satu para kerabat
Grimm yang menjadi tanggung jawab para Godmother. Dengan semakin dekatnya Quest
terbaru yang harus Mina jalani, dan semakin tipisnya waktu untuk menyelamatkan
seluruh pohon keluarga Grimm sebelum Mina dan adiknya Charlie juga ikut menghilang,
Mina harus segera kembali ke masa lalu ke masa leluhurnya dan mencari cara

ada satu kata untuk mendeskripsikan buku ini : WOOW. Tidak banyak buku atau
seri yang dapat membuat aku bersemangat dan penasaran untuk membacanya, tapi Reign
dan seri dari Chanda Hahn ini sudah pasti termasuk di dalam daftar pendek itu.
Dalam
Reign, kita dibawa kembali ke dunia peri pada masa lalu pada saat semuanya
bermula, sebelum semua kutukan keluarga Grimm terjadi dan pada masa sebelum
Teague berkuasa. Di dalam buku Reign ini kita dapat melihat bahwa segala
sesuatunya mempunyai dua sisi mata uang yang saling berkaitan. Tidak selamanya
gelap adalah gelap, dan tidak selamanya terang adalah terang. Dan untuk setiap
aksi akan muncul sebuah reaksi. Gaya penulisan Chanda Hahn yang bertempo cepat
tetap membuat Reign ini menarik dan tidak membosankan karena setiap kejadian
yang muncul sulit untuk dapat ditebak dan membuat pembaca semakin penasaran
dengan yang akan terjadi berikutnya.

With the Godmother

Charlie and the human world unharmed in exchange for her surrender to him.
Forever is the last
book of the saga between Mina and Teague. And if I thought that all of the
secrets already out in the previous book, Reign, boy I am very wrong. This book is full
with a lot of surprises and have unpredicted plots towards the ending. When I
read Reign,
I cannot help myself to wish a happy ending, to both Teague and Mina. And
Chanda Hahn didn’t disappoint, I really love the ending in Forever, and I really like
Mina’s and Teague’s character development throughout the series.

Teague
